Power lines

Overhead and underground electric power lines are dangerous and specific control measures must be taken.

A person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU - the new term that includes employers) at a workplace must ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that no person, plant or thing comes within an unsafe distance of any overhead or underground electric line.

If it is not reasonably practicable to ensure the safe distance of a person, plant or thing from an overhead or underground electric line, the PCBU must ensure that:

  • a risk assessment is conducted in relation to the proposed work, and
  • the control measures implemented are consistent with the risk assessment and any requirements of the electricity supply authority responsible for the electric line.

The NSW code of practice Work near overhead powerlines provides practical guidance on the risk control measures, competency requirements and approach distances for workers working near overhead power lines.

The NSW guide Work near underground assets provides practical guidance to prevent injury to people and damage to underground electric lines and other underground assets.
