New work health and safety (WHS) laws were introduced in NSW on 1 January 2012. The WHS laws replaced the occupational health and safety (OHS) laws in NSW.
The WHS laws were developed using the model work WHS laws developed by Safe Work Australia.

The work health and safety legislation is supported by a National compliance and enforcement policy.
The WorkCover compliance policy and prosecution guidelines supplement the National compliance and enforcement policy in respect of the application of the work health and safety legislation in New South Wales.
