Retail trade 

 

This industry includes businesses engaged in the purchasing and on selling of new or used goods, or in selected repair activities such as repair of household equipment or motor vehicles.

This industry includes department stores or other shops, motor vehicle retailers and service outlets, stalls, mail order houses, hawkers, door-to-door sellers, milk vendors, vending machine operators and consumer cooperatives.

Businesses that purchase and on sell goods to the public via the internet and businesses selling goods on a commission basis, are also included in this industry. Businesses engaged in reselling their own goods by auction may also included.

This is a diverse industry sector, which also encompasses retailing of:

  • food, drink and tobacco
  • clothing and footwear
  • furniture and household goods of various kinds
  • motor vehicle sale and servicing
  • motor vehicle fuels, tyres and electrics
  • smash repairers.

 

Some occupations in this industry include: shop managers, retail assistants, visual merchandisers, smash repairers and auto-electricians.
